Man, son held over Prof Rezaul killing

Two more persons were detained in Sreepur village of Bagmara upazila in Rajshahi early yesterday over the murder of Rajshahi University Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee.

They are Abdul Hakim, 63, a retired teacher of Bagmara Pilot High School and his son Ariful Islam, a first year student of Bagmara College, said police.

Earlier on April 26, two persons were arrested in Dargamaria and Khajapara villages.

Prof Rezaul was hacked to death in the city's Shalbagan area on April 23.

Meanwhile, although a fragile law and order situation has been prevailing in Rajshahi city over the week, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police yesterday urged the city dwellers not to be afraid. “Rather come up with bravery and intelligence to cooperate with the police in investigation,” RMP Commissioner Muhammad Shamsuddin told a press briefing at his conference room.

From April 22 to April 28, murders of a couple at Hotel Nice International, Awami League leader Ziaul Haque Tuku and Prof Rezaul took place in Rajshahi. A robbery was also committed during the period.

Police are prioritising the RU teacher murder case and gathered details about the killers, he said.
