Man drops luxury car at Dhaka customs office

The owner of an unregistered luxury car left his vehicle near Customs Intelligence office in Dhaka’s Kakrail area last night, apparently being unable to pay the taxes.

The officials found the red colour Mercedes-Benz SLK 230, worth around Tk 3 crores with taxes, abandoned outside their office on Tuesday night with an unsigned letter from the owner kept inside the car.

The incident came amid customs intelligence officials’ drive against vehicles brought into the country without paying taxes. With this, at least 32 such luxury vehicles have been seized for dodging taxes so far.

In the letter, the car owner said, “I surrendered the car to the headquarters of Customs Intelligence to comply with the law.”

However, the car has broken down.

The officials suspected that the car might be brought into the country with Carnet de Passage facilities but the owner did not return it in due time. Taxes do not apply to cars brought in with Carnet de Passage.

Earlier on April 20, another owner left his luxury car, a 2007 Lexus RX 350, in front of the Customs Intelligence office in Sylhet.
