Man commits suicide after killing 8-year-old daughter

Depressed about getting divorced, a man allegedly committed suicide after killing his eight-year-old daughter at Shahidganj in Sirajganj district headquarters early yesterday.

Selim Ahmed, 35, son of Abdul Mazid, spiked the soft drinks of his daughter Soha Khatun and his mother Setara Begum with sedatives and then tried to strangle them.

Shoha died on the spot. But as his mother regained consciousness during the attempt, Selim left her and hanged himself from a rafter in his room, said Sirajganj Sadar police.

Police recovered two suicide notes; one read, “I am taking my daughter and mother with me. Nobody is responsible for our deaths”, while another said, “I could not take my mother, so taking only my daughter with me. Nobody is responsible for our deaths.”

Police sent the two bodies to Sirajganj General Hospital Morgue for autopsies.

The couple separated two years ago.
