Teacher-student Scuffle

Left-leaning students demand Ducsu polls

Place 4-point demand at press conference

A group of left-leaning students, who were in the Saturday's incident of a scuffle between teachers and students on senate building premises, yesterday announced a four-point demand including immediate holding of Dhaka University Central Students Union (Ducsu) election.

Other demands include punishment for those who attacked students and removal of assistant proctor Rabiul Islam who allegedly led the scuffle.

The demands were made at a press conference at the university's Madhur Canteen yesterday noon.

The Protesters also questioned the neutrality of the investigation committee formed on Sunday by the DU authorities to investigate the incident and demanded inclusion of student representatives in the probe body.

While reading out the statement, Masud Al Mahdi, coordinator of the protest, said, “The students are being deprived of their due rights because of the dysfunctional Ducsu and the absence of student representatives in Senate.”

Denying the allegations of attacking teachers, he said, “When we attempted to enter the senate building premises, a group of teachers pushed us causing the brief scuffle.”

They will also stage a demonstration tomorrow at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla.

On Saturday, the students  demonstrated in front of the senate building demanding inclusion of students' representatives in the senate through Ducsu election.

Eight people were injured in a brief scuffle between two groups of teachers and students in front of the building.
