Lawyers, staff scuffle over bail order

A scuffle broke out between staff and lawyers at Dhaka Sessions Judge's Court premises over a bail order by a judicial magistrate yesterday.

The incident took place around 11:00am when Judicial Magistrate Atikul Islam sent an accused to jail after rejecting his bail petition.

Advocate Mizanur Rahman Mamun, the lawyer of the accused protested and appealed to the court for reconsideration, but the magistrate rejected his appeal.

Meanwhile, some staff members of Judicial Magistrate Court-6 the assaulted some lawyers inside the courtroom after the Magistrate adjourned the court.

The news of the incident soon spread among other lawyers in the court premises.

Hundreds of lawyers then gathered in front of the Chief Judicial Court building brought out a procession demanding the withdrawal of Judicial Magistrate Atikul Islam and exemplary punishment of the staff members.

On the other hand, Mizanur Rahman Mamun, also the general secretary of Dhaka Bar Association, threatened to boycott the concerned court if punishment is not handed to the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, District and Sessions Judge SM Kuddus Zaman and Metropolitan Sessions Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah went to the spot took the situation under control.

They assured the agitating lawyers that the magistrate would be on leave and they will take an action against the staff after an investigation into the matter.
