Khulna Wasa to lay down 320km more sewerage line

Also takes up two water refining projects

To remove waterlogging problems and modernise Khulna city, Khulna Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (KWASA) has taken up a project to set up 320km sewerage line and two water refining projects.

KWASA will implement the projects with the assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB) involving Tk 497 crore.

KWASA sources said the authorities had already completed pre-feasibility survey and waste water management master plan. Appointment of consultant and design work for the project would start in November this year.

Rezaul Islam, executive engineer of KWASA, said a massive change would take place in the city after implementation of the project. A team of ADB visited Khulna in October last year to modernise sewerage activities in the city and a master plan has been submitted to the authorities after completing pre-feasibly survey by IPI global and BITS consulting firms. The KWASA is working for implementing the master plan considering population of Khulna city by 2035.

The sewerage line will be set up into three phases as per the master plan. The first phase will begin this year and would continue for next 20 years.

According to the master plan, waste water will flow into the treatment plant through pipe lines. The water will be supplied to industrial units after treatment. Besides, seven pump stations and two water refineries will be set up in the city for removing waste water. At least two crore liters of waste water will be purified at two treatment plants every day.

The project will be implemented by 2023, said KWASA Managing Director Md Abdullah.
