Khaleda's statement on judiciary not true
Says law minister
Terming BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's recent statement on the judiciary “untrue”, Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday urged all to remain respectful to the judiciary and courts.
Khaleda, at her party's executive committee meeting at a Dhaka hotel on Saturday, alleged that the country's lower courts are now under the grip of the government and they do not have the power to deliver proper judgments.
“We have seen the consequences of delivering proper judgments. A chief justice had to leave the country for delivering the right verdict in Tarique Zia's case,” she added.
Referring to her comments, Anisul yesterday said the trial in graft cases against Khaleda are being conducted on the basis of documents and evidence.
Judges will deliver their verdicts considering all those facts, the minister told reporters after a seminar organised by Bangladesh Employers' Federation at a hotel in Gulshan area.
About the resignation of the senior most judge of the Appellate Division, Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, Anisul said it was his personal decision and there is no constitutional obligation to follow seniority in appointing a chief justice.
Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, a senior judge of the Appellate Division, was appointed the chief justice on February 2.
