Zia Trust Graft Cases

Khaleda skips proceedings again

Hearing adjourned till Sept 3

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday skipped the trial proceedings of Zia Charitable and Zia Orphanage Trust corruption cases due to her "illness".

She did not attend the hearing on August 10 too, showing the same reason.

Yesterday, Special Judge Court-3 Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar recorded statements of four prosecution witnesses in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case and two of them were cross-examined.

However, accusing the prosecutors of dictating to the witnesses, Khaleda's lawyers boycotted the courtroom for five minutes, said one of her counsels Taherul Islam Towhid.

The proceedings were adjourned till September 3.

One case statement says Khaleda and three others abused power to collect Tk 6.19 crore for Zia Charitable Trust during BNP's rule between 1991 and 1996.

According to the other complaint, the BNP chief, her son Tarique Rahman, and four others embezzled Tk 2.1 crore by forming Zia Orphanage Trust that exists only on paper.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the cases.
