Key accused held again after 7 years

Police arrested an accused of the Banskhali 11-murder case in Chittagong city yesterday.

The arrestee is Md Jasim, 40, son of Abdus Sukkur, said police.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Salahuddin of Banshkhali Police Station, said, “Jasim had been on the run since the case was filed in 2003, but was once arrested in 2011”.

“Later, he got bail and fled to Oman. He came back to Bangladesh in 2016, and was arrested again yesterday in connection with the same case,” OC added. 

Yesterday, Jasim was caught by locals and handed over to police, the law enforcers said, adding, he will be produced before the court tomorrow.  In November 2003, a group of criminals set fire to Tajendra Shil's house at Shilpara in Banskhali, killing 11 members of the family. Tajendra's son Bimal Shil filed a case the next day against 30 to 35, including Jasim.

Investigation Officer Hla Ching Pru on January 2011 submitted a supplementary charge sheet against 39 people.

On September 12, the court framed charges against Jasim and 37 others.
