JU female dorm gates to close at 10:00pm

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have issued a notice asking its female resident students to enter their dormitories by 10:00pm.

According to the notice, signed by Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique and issued on Thursday, all the main entrances of female dormitories will be closed at 10:00pm, and no student can enter after the deadline.

The deadline is an old rule of the university but its enforcement has been relaxed since 2014 amid vehement protest of resident students.

However, Kabbo Krittika, a member of Jahangirnagar Theatre, yesterday said the restriction would hamper the smooth practice of cultural activities on the campus. The authorities imposed such a ban as they are incapable of providing adequate security, she added.

Meanwhile, an associate professor of history, Parvin Jolly, called the decision “discriminatory” against female students.

Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam said the university every year issues the notice as a reminder, especially for the freshers. Like earlier, students who cannot make it to the hall by 10:00pm can enter by writing the reasons for being late.
