Jagannath University students today took their demonstration to Paltan demanding residential halls for students at the vacated land of Dhaka Central Jail.

Last reported around 11:45am, their demonstration blocked a significant portion of roads in the area, a major gateway to Dhaka’s commercial hub Motijheel.

The students have been agitating for new halls inside Dhaka jail area after the prison was shifted to Keraniganj. Many of their existing halls are under occupation.

After days of demonstrations and hitching with police, today hundreds of students marched to Paltan. They broke away from barricades placed at Rai Shaheb Bazar and Tanti Bazar points.

Police were trying to persuade the students to leave Paltan, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station.
