Agitating students of Jagannath University will go for two-day sit-in programme Sunday at campus to press home their demand for residential halls on the vacated land of Dhaka's central jail.

Along with their class boycott programme, they called for the sit-in this afternoon during a protest rally at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

Speaking at the occasion, a JnU student Mahidul Islam announced the sit-in on Sunday and Monday at the university premises.

Nearly one thousand students attended the rally that continued between 3:00pm and 5:00pm.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, Dhaka University teacher Robaet Ferdous and Gonojagoron Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker, among others, expressed solidarity with the students.

“Authorities have to answer why the students, who are supposed to be busy in study, have taken to streets,” barrister Jyotirmoy said, asking protesters not to be “politically divided”.

Imran H Sarker called upon the students to continue with the protest until the demand is met.

“Where and how the dormitories will be built is not important. Fact is the students badly need dormitories, which the authorities must ensure,” he said.

The students started their demonstration on August 2 soon after Dhaka central Jail was shifted to Keraniganj last month.
