JnU students continue demo for dorms

Stage sit-in in Paltan

Jagannath University (JnU) students continued demonstrating through a sit-in that blocked a significant portion of a road in the capital's Paltan yesterday, demanding dormitories for them on the land of old Dhaka central jail.

They announced a solidarity rally of teachers and students of different public universities at the Central Shaheed Minar for tomorrow, from where they will announce the next course of actions.

They will also form a human chain on Saturday, said the demonstrators.

The traffic heading towards Motijheel, a commercial hub, were disrupted.

Earlier in the morning, the agitating students padlocked the administrative buildings of the university.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday said his ministry had already taken necessary steps to resolve the accommodation crisis of the university, according to a press release.

The release, however, did not clarify the steps.

Earlier, the students brought out several processions on the campus. On August 17, they staged a sit-in before Jatiya Press Club.

On Monday, they announced a two-day strike after their march towards the Prime Minister's Office was intercepted in Bangshal.

Yesterday, hundreds of students marched to Paltan. Police tried in vain to stop them at Rai Shaheb Bazar and Tanti Bazar intersections.
