Jagpa president Shafiul Alam Prodhan dies

Shafiul Alam Prodhan, president of Jatiya Gonotantrik Party (Jagpa), died at his Asad Gate residence in the capital yesterday morning. He was 67.

He had been suffering from fever for the last few days, said BNP chairperson's media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

He is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.

Jatiya Gonotantrik Party is an ally of the BNP-led 20-party alliance.

Meanwhile, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia expressed deep shock at the death of Prodhan.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited Prodhan's house and consoled his family members.

Family sources said he will be buried at Bananai Graveyard today after the Zohr prayers.

Born in Panchagarh in 1950, Prodhan involved with politics during his student life and became the general secretary of the Chhatra League (1973-74).

Prodhan, son of East Pakistan Provincial Assembly speaker Tamizuddin, formed Jagpa on April 6, 1980.
