Int'l confce on medical engineering starts at UIU

To boost the country's health sector, a two-day international conference on medical engineering, health informatics and technology, organised by United International University (UIU), began on its Dhanmondi campus in the capital yesterday.

At the conference, “MediTec 2016”, as many as 40 research papers and 10 keynote papers are expected to be presented in 10 plenary and seven technical sessions, said Khondaker Abdullah Al Mamun, a key organiser of the event of which strategic partner is The Daily Star.

He added that noted physicians and biomedical engineers from the USA, UK, Netherlands, UAE as well as Bangladesh will present their papers.

The field of biomedical engineering is booming in the country where significant number of skilled professionals is required, said Mamun, also an associate professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UIU.

UIU Vice Chancellor Prof M Rezwan Khan said researches on biomedical engineering were conducted in a number of universities and the conference can be a platform to take those works to a greater height.

He hoped that the country's health sector including the field dealing with physically challenged persons would benefit from the conference.

Abul Kalam Azad, director general of Directorate General of Health Services, said the government is working to expand technological supports to improve health services.

Many important medical equipment remained malfunctioned at hospitals and clinics for months due to a lack of skilled persons, he said.

He added that the government will create electronic health records of citizens in the next five years.7777
