21 South-Western Dists

Indefinite strike for goods vehicles starts

Goods Transport Owners' and Labourers' Alliance went for an indefinite strike in 21 districts of the country's south-western region yesterday, to press home its demands, including a stop to harassment by law enforcers.

Due to the strike, covering all the districts of Khulna and Barisal divisions and greater Faridpur, trucks, lorries, tank-lorries, covered-vans and pickups did not run yesterday.

The alliance's other demands include removal of taxes imposed on goods carrying vehicles and an end to harassment by BRTA officials.

Abdul Gaffer Biswas, president of the organisation, told The Daily Star that they held a meeting over the issue with the district administration of Khulna at the city's circuit house from where a decision came to hold another meeting at the home ministry in Dhaka today.

Nazmul Ashan, deputy commissioner of Khulna, said they were trying to contact the higher authorities concerned and the BRTA to resolve the crisis.

Abdur Rahman Box Dudu, secretary general of the alliance, said leaders of their organisation and the home minister and shipping minister are expected to attend today's meeting.
