Huge arms cache found in Uttara canal

Police have recovered a huge cache of firearms, which includes 97 Chinese pistols and 1,000 bullets, from a canal in Uttara of Dhaka.

Recovered arms:

--97 pistols

--189 magazines

--1,000 bullets

--10 bayonets

The law enforcers conducted a drive at the canal in Sector-16 of Uttara this afternoon, said Mahmudul Haque, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.

Acting on a tip-off, the police with the help of the fire service and civil defence scoured the canal and made the recovery.

The drive began around 4:00pm.

Divers from fire service recovered at least 97 Chinese pistols, 1,000 bullets, 189 magazines and 10 bayonets from the canal, said Liton Ahmed, senior station officer of Uttara Fire Station, who was present during the drive.

The arms and ammunition were wrapped in paper and kept in seven travel bags, according to the sources.
