HR boss claims his commission duly addressing 'gunfights'

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is clearly informing the government through letters allegations over forced disappearances and “gunfights” and recommending taking necessary steps after proper investigations, said Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque yesterday.

Some “gunfights” might have taken place due to the “lack of knowledge” of police personnel concerned, he said adding, “We were concerned. We still are.”

He acknowledged that there were some instances where persons were suddenly picked up and later shown detained under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

He was making public NHRC's plans for Human Rights Day tomorrow at its office in the capital, including a seminar at the Cirdap auditorium with Law Minister Anisul Huq as the chief guest and noted jurist Barrister Amir-ul Islam presenting a keynote paper.

The role being played by the judiciary was bringing back a sense of security in people's minds, added Reazul.

He also blamed police and the local administration's failure to perform their duties for the recent atrocities in Gaibandha's Gobindaganj and Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar.
