‘If needed, more probe bodies for Siddiqur’

New video of Shahbagh cop action emerges

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan says more probe bodies will be formed if needed into the incident of Siddiqur Rahman, who suffered injuries in his eyes after being allegedly hit by a tear gas canister fired by police.

“One probe body has been formed. If it is deemed dissatisfactory, another probe body will be formed,” he told reporters while addressing a press briefing in his secretariat office this afternoon.

Meanwhile, a new video has emerged narrowing down any speculations as to what happened to Siddiqur that day in Shahbagh as it shows him falling to the ground after police fired a gas canister in close range.

Police had said they smelled sabotage in the injury. Dhaka city’s police chief had said one tear gas canister could not have done such damage to both eyes “without hurting the nose”.

Siddiqur has already lost his right eye and is having intermittent vision in his left.

He was hurt during police action on students of seven government-run colleges, who were demonstrating at Shahbagh demanding immediate examination schedules – fearing a study backlog.
