The hunt for “hidden treasure” in Mirpur remains suspended over safety issues of adjacent buildings. Further steps will not be taken without expert consultation.

A magistrate along with Mirpur police visited the house at 12noon today, Dadon Fakir, officer-in-charge of the police station, told The Daily Star.

The magistrate, who was not present when the digging began yesterday, said it was unsafe to keep digging into the house which was built back in 1960.

He instead suggested using a scanning device to find whether there is any metallic substance beneath the ground before further digging.

It was also decided that a committee of experts will be formed in this regard to supervise the excavation work and its recommendation will be followed, the OC said.

The magistrate suggested informing the authorities of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) for their help in the excavation work.

Meanwhile, Moqsud Ali Tapan, owner of the adjacent house, alleged that he has been the most affected in the episode of ‘treasure hunt’, as his house shares boundary wall and roof with the building which is being dug.

Tapan, who has been living in the adjacent building since 1973 with his family, also claimed that they never heard of any hidden treasure in the house until recently in the last week.
