Help resolve commercial disputes through ADR

Jurists, business leaders urge govt

The government has to help resolve commercial disputes through alternative dispute resolution (ADR) system and help business to flourish and avoid complicated and time consuming court procedure, said speakers at a meeting yesterday.

The meeting “Role of BIAC in promotion of ADR” was organised by Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) in the capital's Sonargaon Hotel.

BIAC Chairman Mahbubur Rahman, who presided over the programme, said Bangladesh has a burdensome court litigation process that most businesses find frustrating, which is viewed as an impediment to its private sector development.

In response, Law Minister Anisul Huq said the government has taken steps for implementing ADR in the country effectively.

He also said the government is working on formulating rules for implementing changes in the civil procedure code introducing mandatory mediation provisions.

Jurists including Justice Awlad Ali, Rafique-Ul Huq, Ajmalul Hossain and Nihad Kabir; and business leaders including Rokia Afzal Rahman and Tapan Choudhury, among others, spoke, a law ministry press release said.
