Tavella Murder Case

Hearing rescheduled for July 17

Considering the importance and gravity of the offences brought against seven people, including BNP leader MA Quayum, a Dhaka court yesterday rescheduled the date for hearing of the Italian national Cesare Tavella murder case.

Tavella, an aid worker, was killed in the capital's Gulshan diplomatic zone on September 28 last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Nur Nabi fixed July 17 after Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu submitted a petition for the rescheduling, even though another Dhaka court had earlier fixed August 4 for the hearing.

PP Abu mentioned that the case is a sensational one and the government considered it as an important one. So, the date should be rescheduled for its quick disposal.

On June 28, detectives submitted a charge sheet against seven people to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.

Of them, Quayum is a joint convener of the BNP's Dhaka city unit and also a former ward commissioner of the erstwhile Dhaka City Corporation.

The other accused are Quayum's brother Abdul Matin, Tamjid Ahmed Rubel, Russell Chowdhury, Minhajul Arefin, also known as Bhagne Russell, Sohel alias Bhangari Sohel, supplier of firearms, and Shakhawat Hossain Sharif, who provided the motorcycle used in the killing.

Quayum and Sohel are on the run while five others are behind bars.
