Faruk Murder

HC turns down MP Rana's 3rd bail plea

The High Court yesterday once again denied bail to Tangail's Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.

The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil rejected Rana's bail petition as it was not submitted before it properly, Assistant Attorney General Bashir Ahmed told The Daily Star.

Rana, now in jail, was denied bail in the case three times before by the HC, court sources said.

On March 27, the HC bench fixed yesterday for delivering a verdict on the MP's bail petition after concluding hearing on a rule issued on the question of granting bail to him in the case.

On January 18, another HC bench following the bail petition filed by Rana issued the rule asking the government to explain why Rana should not be granted bail in the case.

A murder case was filed after Tangail AL leader freedom fighter Faruk's bullet-hit body was found in his hometown on January 18, 2013.

Police claimed to have found evidence of Rana, an MP from Tangail-3 constituency, and his three brothers' involvement in the murder of Faruk, according to a report published in the Bangla daily Prothom Alo on September 14, 2014.

Rana surrendered to a Tangail court on September 18 last year. Rana and his three brothers were expelled from the district AL on charges of various allegations.
