HC slaps injunction on admission of 57 students

The High Court yesterday issued an injunction on the authorities concerned of Uttara Adhunik Medical College for restraining academic activities of 57 students who were admitted on “first-come, first-served” basis.

The court also issued a rule asking the respondents to explain in 10 days why the admission of 57 students should not be declared as contravention with the government notice, which directed the medical college authorities to admit students on the basis of their merits.

Health secretary, director general of the directorate of health services, and principal of the medical college have been made respondents.

The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan issued the order and the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by the guardian of a deprived admission seeker challenging the legality of the admission of 57 students.

Writ petitioner’s lawyer Advocate M Asaduzzaman told The Daily Star that the director of health services on August 20 last year issued a notice directing the medical college authorities to admit students on the basis of merits.

But Uttara Adhunik Medical College admitted 57 students in December last year on “first come first served” basis in violation of the government notice, he added.

Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Sazu represented the government.
