Tonu KILLING

HC rejects plea seeking arrest of killers in 24hrs

Considering that petition not moved properly

The High Court yesterday rejected a writ petition seeking its directive upon the government to arrest in 24 hours the killers of Comilla's Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu.

The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice AKM Shahidul Huq passed the rejection order considering that the petition was not moved properly. Earlier, two other HC benches dropped the same petition from their hearing list as the petitioner and also the lawyer, Eunus Ali Akond, was not present in the court during the hearing and the investigation into the incident is running.

He filed the petition with the HC on April 4 seeking its directives on the government to launch a judicial inquiry and arrest the killer(s) within 24 hours.

In the petition, Eunus prayed to the court to order the government to give Tk 30 lakh as compensation to the victim's family.

He also requested the HC to issue a rule asking the government to explain as to why its inaction over arresting the killer(s) should not be declared illegal.

Tonu, a second year history student at Comilla Victoria Government College and a theatre activist, was found murdered in Comilla cantonment area on March 20.
