Defamation Case

HC doesn't hear AK Khandker plea

A High Court bench yesterday felt embarrassed to hear a petition filed by former planning minister Air Vice-Marshal (retd) AK Khandker for scrapping a defamation case against him.

The case was filed for his statement in his book "1971: Bhetore Baire" that some members of Mujib Bahini, an armed force formed during the Liberation War, were involved in looting after the country's independence and most of them were not found in the battle field.

MA Ihshaq Bhuiyan, a Mujib Bahini member, filed the case with a Brahmanbaria court on last September 10.

The bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore also dropped the petition from its hearing list, Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ullah said.

AK Khandker, who was the deputy chief of staff of Bangladesh Armed Forces in 1971, can move the petition before another HC bench, the DAG said.
