Walking on Students

HC cancels bail of Chandpur chairman

Asks him to surrender in four weeks

The High Court yesterday scrapped a lower court order that granted bail to Chandpur's Haimchar upazila Chairman Nur Hossain Patwary in a case filed for walking over a “human bridge” formed by students of a local school on January 30.

The court also directed Nur to surrender to the lower court in four weeks.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim came up with the order following a petition filed against the lower court order.

A picture of Nur walking over the “human bridge” went viral on the social media, drawing outrage and criticism, in the first week of February.

Abdul Kadir Gazi, a guardian of one of the students of Nilkamal School, lodged the case against five people including Nur, also suspended general secretary of Awami League Haimchar upazila unit, under the children act.

Following a bail petition filed by Nur, Chandpur's Shishu Adalot granted him bail on March 29.

The guardian, Abdul Kadir, later on filed the petition with the HC challenging the lower court order that granted bail to Nur.

Chandpur's Shishu Adalot granted the bail although the case against him was pending with the chief judicial magistrate court of the district and even the charge sheet was not submitted yet, Abdul Kadir said in the petition.

Advocate Shaharia Kabir Biplob and Advocate Sarwar Hossain appeared for the petitioner, while Advocate SM Rezaul Karim

argued for the upazila chairman.
