Guardians of students of Scholarshome in Sylhet protest fee hike

Fees increased to realise teachers' salary says a teacher seeking anonymity

Guardians of six of the branches of Scholarshome Preparatory School yesterday formed human chains near Pathantula, Shibganj, Majortila, Shaplay road,

and Shahi Eidghah areas in Sylhet city, and Dakhin Surma, protesting a sudden Tk 600 increment in the tuition fees.

They threatened to launch a tougher movement, if the fees were not reduced by May 30.

“The school authority suddenly decided to charge Tk 2,000 from this month,” said Moinul Islam, convener of Scholarshome Guardians Forum, Shibganj unit, adding that they will submit a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of Sylhet today.

According to Scholarshome, around 5,500 students are studying between kindergarten and twelfth grade in six of its branches, whose fees have been increased.

There was no untoward incident but the protest led to a huge traffic congestion on Sylhet-Tamabil road since it was near Eidghah area, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shahporan Police Station.

Contacted, Dr Kabir Chowdhury, academic council chairman of Scholarshome, did not make any comments regarding the fee hike.

Seeking anonymity, a teacher of the private institution said the fees were increased to realise the teachers' salary.
