Guardians assault school teacher with shoe

She refused to tutor due to her kidney ailment

Police yesterday arrested a guardian, a local political leader, for assaulting and threatening a female teacher at her house in Fatulla area as she had refused to tutor his granddaughter.

The arrestee is advocate Abdul Majid Khandakar, member secretary of Narayanganj district Jatiya Party. Police are yet to arrest his wife, Rokeya Khandakar.  A case was filed against the two with Fatulla Model Police Station yesterday afternoon.

Father of the teacher, Shahinur Parveen Shanu of Pacific International School at Hajiganj in Fatulla, filed the case accusing the two, said Kamal Uddin, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Around 7:30pm on Sunday, the arrestee's wife, Rokeya, came to her rented house in Hajiganj area and asked her to tutor her granddaughter, said Shahinur, who returned home yesterday morning after receiving treatment at the 300-bed Hospital at Khanpur the day before.

After she turned down her proposition on health grounds due to kidney ailments she has been suffering for the last six months, Rokeya became infuriated and left the house, the teacher said.

Rokeya returned to her house with her husband, Majid, half an hour later and they threatened to electrocute her, she added.

At one stage, they choked her throat and started to beat her up with shoes in front of all family members including her young children, Shahinur said.

Demanding justice, her mother Rabeya Islam said Shahinur stopped tutoring students after she became sick with kidney disease six months ago.

Amir Jan Ara, assistant head teacher at Pacific International School, echoed the same sentiment.

The accused, Abdul Majid Khandakar, however, denied the allegation and said Shahinur insulted them by refusing their proposal outright. They only returned her the same treatment she had given them.

“I said that I would beat her up with shoe, but I didn't do so,” he claimed.

Dr Tahmina Nazneen, a physician at the 300-bed Hospital, said they found injury marks and several other signs of physical assault on Shahinur's body.

After paying a visit to Shahinur's house yesterday, additional superintendent of police in Narayanganj (Ka circle), Sharfuddin, said they are investigating the allegations brought against the accused.
