FAHIM'S DEATH IN 'GUNFIGHT'

Govt served legal notice for judicial probe

A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday sent a legal notice to the government asking it to conduct a judicial inquiry into the death of Golam Faizullah Fahim, who was killed in a "shootout" with law enforcers in Madaripur on June 18, in order to reveal the truth in this regard.

Fahim, 18, was accused in a case filed for the murder of Ripan Chakraborty, a lecturer of Madaripur Government Nazimuddin University College.

He was on remand during the "gunfight."

SM Zulfiqure Ali, a lawyer of the apex court, served the notice to the home secretary, inspector general of police, superintendent of police of Madaripur and officer-in-charge of Madaripur Sadar police.

In the notice, he asked the respondents to explain in 15 days whether Fahim was killed in a shootout or he was killed to hide the real culprits.

Zulfiqure also asked them to explain as to why departmental action would not be taken against the police personnel involved in Fahim's death.

There were dramatic, mysterious elements in the reported incident of his death, said the lawyer.

The incident took place when the accused was in police custody, and it is a violation of human rights and against the practicing criminal laws and SC guidelines as well, Zulfiqure mentioned in the notice.

He added that he will move a petition before the High Court seeking necessary directives on the respondents if they did not respond to the notice.
