Govt moves against Fakhrul’s bail

The Supreme Court today fixed July 2 for hearing the petitions against the High Court orders that granted bail to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three vandalism and arson cases.

Earlier in the day, the government submitted three separate petitions to the SC, seeking stay on the HC bail orders for Fakhrul.

After a brief hearing, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foez Siddique sent the petitions to its full bench for their hearing on July 2.

The HC on June 21 granted bail to the BNP acting secretary general in the cases filed against him with Paltan Police Station on January 4, 5 and 7 this year under Explosive Substances Act.

On Sunday (June 28), the SC upheld the HC June 18 orders that had granted bail to Fakhrul, who is now undertaking treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College, in three other criminal cases.

Of the three cases, two were filed with Paltan Police Station on December 28 last year and January 4 this year. The other was lodged with Motijheel Police Station on January 6.

On April 16, Fakhrul, who is accused in 89 cases, had got bail in another similar case.

He was detained from the capital’s Jatiya Press Club on January 5, and later, was shown arrested in the seven cases.
