Govt to form response team to address cyber attacks

The government has decided to form a computer incident response team (CIRT) under Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) to address cyber attacks, officials said.

They said the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division has issued an office order giving mandate to the council CIRT to act as government computer incident response team under “BGD e-Gov CIRT”.

“The government is making its best efforts to establish national cyber security incident management capabilities in Bangladesh as cyber crime and cyber attacks have emerged as a threat to digitisation and IT system,” said Tarique M Barkatullah, director of National Data Centre.

He said the BGD e-Gov CIRT will manage cyber security incidents in Bangladesh government network and related infrastructure.

The BGD e-Gov CIRT will serve as a catalyst in organising national cyber security resilience initiatives including education, workforce competence, regulation, cyber exercises among various stakeholders, Tarique said.

He said the main objective of BGD e-Gov CIRT is to support the government efforts to develop and amplify ICT programmes by establishing and maintaining cyber security incident management capabilities within environment of government of Bangladesh.

According to BCC, as per terms and conditions, there will be one team leader along with other members in the CIRT team from Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance (LICT) Project and BCC.
