Govt corruption barring progress

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday alleged that the country was not progressing for the ruling party's men were engaged in corruption in all sectors.

“The country is not running as it should be due to the government's corruption...People want to get rid of this political culture of looting. A free, fair national election under a neutral administration is needed,” she said.

People are eagerly expecting a change, she told an iftar party organised by the Association of Engineers of Bangladesh, a pro-BNP professionals' platform, in the capital's Bashundhara residential area.

Being unelected, the government has no responsibility towards people and is not standing beside those suffering from flooding around the country, she said.

Referring to media reports on the import of two lakh tonnes of allegedly substandard wheat from Brazil, she said the government was yet to take steps against the minister concerned.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Khaleda expressed deep concern over the death of a BNP leader, Mosleh Uddin, in custody on Saturday night, terming it unnatural and demanding a fair judicial investigation.

She alleged that the deceased was not provided treatment after falling sick and that some arrested leaders and activists were dying due to torture.
