The health condition of college student Rajib Hossain, who lost his right hand in a road mishap in Dhaka last week, is gradually improving but is not out of danger yet, a doctor at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said today.

The 22-year-old student has been kept under the observation of three to four senior doctors and they are giving him the best treatment, Prof Dr MS Zaman Shaheen, head of orthopedic department of the DMCH, told The Daily Star this afternoon.

It might take several months more to get him fully recovered from his injuries, Prof Zaman hoped.

“He will be given an artificial arm within that time, he added.

Rajib, lost his hand as it was sandwiched between two speeding buses racing to overtake each other in the capital's Banglamotor area on Tuesday.

Profusely bleeding, he was taken to MH Samorita Hospital on Panthapath and was later shifted to the intensive care unit of DMCH. A seven-member medical board has been looking after his treatment.

On April 5, doctors of the hospital said Rajib was not out of danger yet.

“Apart from the hand, he sustained injuries in his head. He had brain haemorrhages… We will say he is in danger until it is resolved, ”Dr Khan AbulKalam Azad, principal of DMCH, told reporters that day.

After the accident, the government announced that it would bear all the treatment expenses of Rajib, a third-year honours student at Government Titumir College, and pledged to get him a job after his recovery.

The High Court on Wednesday directed the owners of the two buses to bear Rajib's medical expenses.

In response to a writ petition, the HC also issued a rule asking the government and the bus owners to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to give RajibTk 1 crore in compensation.
