Golam Akbar Chowdhury passes away

Politician and social worker Golam Akbar Chowdhury died of old-age ailments at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in the capital yesterday. He was 86.

Akbar left behind his wife Awami League presidium member and deputy leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, three sons and a daughter.

President Abdul Hamid in a message expressed deep shock at his death.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in another message said Akbar Chowdhury was very close to Bangabandhu. Sarbadaliya Chhatra Sangram Parishad (all-party student movement council) was formed in Chittagong for the Language Movement with Akbar in the chair. He also served as a honorary member in the planning cell of the Mujibnagar Government during the Liberation War. Bangladesh has lost a patriotic figure. She visited the residence of Akbar, also a Language Movement veteran, in the afternoon, said PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon also condoled the death of Akbar.
