Gazipur truck plunge kills 4

Three others die in road crashes

Three passengers and the driver of a truck were killed as the vehicle plunged into a roadside ditch in Baghia area of Gazipur city early yesterday, said police.

The trucker lost his control over the steering while he was clearing a passage for a human hauler, Joydevpur police Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Hasan Reza quoted locals as saying.

Sujon Roy, 23, son of Horesh Chondro Roy; Dilip Roy, 22, son of Olin Roy; and Kajol Roy, 24, son of Rakhal Roy -- all are brick kiln workers -- died instantly.

The trucker Sohel Mia, 29, son of Alek Mia, succumbed to his injuries at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital after locals rushed him there.

Sujon's uncle Shubash Roy, the lone passenger escaping unhurt, said they were returning from Kaliakoir to their workplace -- Korom Molla Brick.

The truck could not be lift up till last evening, said the OC.

Our Mymensingh correspondent reports, a schoolboy died as he was hit against a wheel of speeding battery-run auto-rickshaw after he jumped off the vehicle in Char Gobindapur village of Sadar upazila.

Rakibul Hasan, 6, son of Hafizul Islam and first-grader of a local school, was playing with some children after getting on the vehicle, said locals.

His friends got down soon after the vehicle started moving but Rakibul could not, they said.

Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports, motorcyclist Alkes Ali, 55, was killed and his co-rider injured after a tractor hit the bike from the opposite direction on Sheikh Hasina Bridge in Sadar upazila on Wednesday night.

Injured Ramjan Ali, 28, was admitted to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital.

Our Dinajpur correspondent adds, Taibur Rahman, 70, died instantly as a bus hit him from behind while he was walking along Joypurhat-Akkelpur road in Natunhat area in Joypurhat yesterday.
