5 restaurant workers burnt in fire

Five workers suffered burns in a fire originated from a gas cylinder leak at a restaurant in Demra of Dhaka yesterday.

The victims were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Sub-inspector Bachchu Mia of DMCH police outpost.

Faruk, 42, suffered 66 percent burns, Chan Mia, 35, 57 percent and Harun, 50, 14 percent, the unit resident surgeon Partha Sankar Paul told The Daily Star.

The other two -- Billal Hossain, 50, and Felani, 18 -- received first aid at the burn unit.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of Red Chilly Restaurant in Monibagh area of Matuail, said victim Billal.

“We were cooking in the kitchen in the morning. Suddenly, a fire originated from a gas leak and injured five of us,” he told reporters at DMCH.

Ataur Rahman, duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters, said the fire had been extinguished before they reached the spot.
