Fire at corona unit: Probe report says United Hospital authorities should’ve been more cautious

The fire at corona unit of United Hospital originated from short circuit of an air conditioner (AC), Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brigadier General Md Sazzad Hossain said today.

He was citing a probe report that was submitted to the home ministry today.

If the doctors, nurses or staff of the corona unit were more careful, the fire would not have spread, he said.

The authorities of the United Hospital should have been more cautious to install a fire system at the corona unit as they had done in main building of the hospital.

The unit was established temporarily as per the government's instruction, he said adding, so the fire system was also installed there temporarily.

The authorities constructed the unit fast but were not cautious to follow the fire guidelines properly, he added.

A four-member committee formed by the fire service submitted the probe report to the home ministry today.

On May 27 night, five people died in the fire that broke out at the Corona Isolation Unit of the hospital in Dhaka.
