Farmers Bank ex-audit officer sent to jail after remand

A Dhaka court yesterday sent former chairman of Farmers Bank Audit Committee Mahbubul Haque Chisty to jail after completion of his seven-day remand in two phases in a Tk 160 crore graft case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Delwar Hossain passed the order after Shamsul Alam, deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Commission and also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, had produced him before the court on the expiry of the remand.

The court also rejected his bail petition.

In the yesterday's forwarding report, the IO said the accused gave important information about the incident. So he needs to be kept in jail until the investigation completes, the IO added.

On April 18, Chisty's son Rashedul Haque Chisty, the bank's Senior Vice President Zia Uddin Ahmed and First Vice President Masudur Rahman Khan were sent to jail on the expiry of their four-day remand each.

On April 10, Shamsul Alam filed a case with Gulshan Police Station against six persons, including the four and Mahbubul's wife Ruzi Chisty and ex-manager of the bank's Gulshan Corporate Branch Delwar Hossain.

The same day, the ACC arrested Mahabubul Haque Chisty, his son and two others and they were placed on remand for different terms.
