Farmers Bank ex-audit committee chief denied bail in graft case

The High Court today rejected a bail petition of Mahbubul Haque Chisty, former chairman of Farmers Bank audit committee, in a corruption case filed for misappropriating Tk nine lakh of the bank funds for his personal travelling.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice K M Hafizul Alam passed the rejection order after holding a final hearing on the petition.

Deputy Attorney General AKM Aminuddin Manik told The Daily Star that Mahbubul Haque Chisty cannot walk out of jail following the HC order.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Gulshan Police Station on August 8 last year against Chisty on charge of spending Tk 9.24 lakh from the bank funds for travelling to London and Arab emirates.

Following his bail petition, the HC on November 19 last year had issued a rule asking the government and ACC to explain why Chisty should not be granted bail in the case.

The HC concluded the hearing on the rule on yesterday and fixed today for passing order.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam appeared for the government and Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan argued for the ACC while Barrister Shafik Ahmed stood for Chisty.

The anti-graft body arrested Chisty from Dhaka’s Segunbagicha area on April 10 last year.
