A family perishes on the road

Three members of a family were killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Tangail highway at Delduar upazila in Tangail yesterday.

The deceased are Fahima Akter, 35, wife of Saudi Arabia expatriate Tara Miah, and her daughter Tarina Akter, 13, and son Tanvir Ahmed, 7. The family lived in Nallapara village of the upazila.

Police said the accident took place in Dubail area around 1:30pm when a Dhaka bound bus from Sirajgaj ran over the three when they were crossing the highway, leaving them dead on the spot.

The driver of the bus fled the scene, but locals seized the vehicle and caught the helper and supervisor and handed them over to the law enforcers, they said.

Fahima, a mother of three, along with her two children, was going to enjoy a sporting event in Mohera Police Training Centre, in neighbouring Mirzapur upazila, said Mosharaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Delduar Police Station.

The bodies were handed over to the relatives without autopsy following legal procedures, he added. After the bodies reached home, Fahima's elder daughter Taslima Akter, 16, lost consciousness, said locals.

In Narsingdi, four people were killed and 15 others injured as a covered van hit a bus on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Kandhail area near Madhobdi Police Station.

The deceased were Abdur Rahman, 48, his son Robiul Islam, 18, and one Suma Aktar, 16, and Hena Begum, 28, all residents of the sadar upazila.

In Moulvibazar, a motorcyclist was killed as a truck hit him from behind in Shurovipara area of Sreemangal upazila.

The motorcyclist, Mofazzal Mia, 28, lived in the sadar upazila.
