Families flock to adopt baby girl rescued from Mirpur dustbin

The baby girl, who was rescued from a dustbin in Mirpur, is having a speedy recovery while many families from all classes throng in with requests for her adoption.

The baby was rescued when she was just a day old from a dustbin on the Ashulia-Mirpur-Beribadh road in Shah Ali area of Dhaka’s Mirpur on March 11.

The baby had been breast fed by a woman until yesterday when the doctors decided to make her habituated with milk solutions, Khawaja Abdul Gafur, deputy director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), told The Daily Star today.

She is being fed with 8-9ml milk solution every two hours when she is awake, he said.

The baby is now in a stable condition but still not fully out of danger as she is a bit underweight, Gafur also said, adding that she weighs 1725 grammes whereas normal weight of a baby at this stage is 2500 grammes.

The child is being taken care of by specialised doctors, he further said.

Meanwhile, more than 20 families from different classes have come up to the DMCH authorities with adoption requests for the baby girl, the DMCH deputy director said.

However, the DMCH authorities told them to take a court order in this regard and only then they could adopt the child, he added.

Most of the families that are trying to adopt the child are either wealthy or childless.

Requests for adoption have also been received by the police department, Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Police are still searching for the real identity of the child, the OC added.
