Fakhrul expects 'neutral' search committee to form new EC

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday hoped that President Abdul Hamid would form a neutral search committee to constitute an impartial and acceptable Election Commission (EC), as the president concluded discussions with political parties.

He expressed the hope while talking to reporters after placing a wreath at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman marking 81st birth anniversary of the late president.

“We are optimistic about the president's initiative…  We are hopeful to get a positive result from this initiative,” said Fakhrul.

The president so far held talks with 31 registered political parties that ended on Wednesday.

Earlier, led by the party chief Khaleda Zia, several hundred BNP leaders and activists went to city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at about 11:30am to place wreaths at Zia's grave.

BNP and its associated organisations have taken elaborate programmes to mark Zia's birth anniversary. Doctors Association of Bangladesh launched a free medical camp and distribution of medicine in front of BNP's Naya Paltan central office from 9:00am to 3:00pm.
