Govt plans to dredge another 178 rivers

Minister tells JS

The government is planning to dredge another 178 rivers to increase their navigability, said Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Manju yesterday.

While responding to a query, the minister informed the parliament that since 2009 around 1,200 kilometres of river route has so far been increased through dredging.

The length of internal river routes of the country is 6,000 kilometres during the monsoon and 4,000 kilometres in the dry season, the minister added.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Mohammed Nasim yesterday lambasted lawyers who are giving legal assistance to the  unqualified medical colleges who have been ordered by the health ministry to stop fresh academic admissions.

The minister also added that his ministry has launched adolescent friendly health care services at 11 districts for providing adolescent girls with health services.
