Eviction drive at Mohammadpur

Eviction in Bijli Maholla to widen road

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) today evicted over 100 structures in Mohammadpur’s Bijli Maholla in Dhaka in face of protests to widen a road.

Executive Magistrate SM Ajior Rahman led the drive on the road stretching from Badsha Faysal Institute to Jannathbagh Physical Centre around 12:00noon.

According to the plan of Rajdhani Unnyan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), the road is 60 feet wide, but narrowed by structures on both sides, said Ajior Rahman.

However, around 40 families who were driven out complained they were evicted without any rehabilitation and proper compensation.

During the drive, the settlers protested the eviction with brickbats – a tense standoff that lasted for about 10 minutes before the mobile court team brought the situation under control.
