English the weakest link

Over a third of the students who failed in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations under Dinajpur Education Board have failed in English.

A total of 34.49 percent failed in the subject this year in the board out of 47,556 failed students.

The total percentage of failure in the board is 24.17. Among the unsuccessful students, 28,882 failed in one subject while 18,674 failed in multiple subjects.

After English, the second highest failure percentage is 24.58 -- in Higher Mathematics and the third highest failure is 22.56 percent in Physics, according to Tofazzur Rahman, examinations controller of the board.

Some 22.56 percent students failed in Physics, 17.76 percent in Accounting, 12.54 percent in Chemistry, 11.67 percent in Information and Communication Technology and 4.75 percent students failed in Bangla, he added.

A total of 71,951 or 60.21 percent of students among 1,19,507 examinees have passed the exams this year from 653 colleges, according to board officials.

The pass rate of girls is 64.51 percent while that of boys is 56.22 percent. A lesser number of students -- 2,297, secured GPA-5 this year against last year's total number 2,987.
