Enforce strict law to stop illegal stone extraction

Seminar told

Strict enforcement of law is a must to stop illegal stone extraction, said rights activists and environmentalists at a seminar in Sylhet yesterday.

The seminar titled, “Illegal Stone Extraction: Strict Enforcement of Law Needed”, was organised by Bela at a city hotel.

Speakers said illegal stone extraction has become a serious issue over the years. They alleged that a syndicate, backed by some politicians, is involved in extracting and selling stone.

The seminar was chaired by Faruk Mahmud Chowdhury, president of Sylhet chapter of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN), while Advocate Shah Shaheda Akhter, regional coordinator of BELA, presented the keynote speech.

Officials from administration and the department of environment, journalists and members of rights organisation were present.
