Minor Domestic Help's Death in Dhaka

Employer couple confess to torture

A couple, arrested in connection with the death of their domestic help, have admitted that they had been torturing the 11-year-old girl for several months, said police.

They often seared her face, arm, back and other parts of the body with hot kitchen utensils and beat her up, they said.

“The girl suffered the inhuman torture because of silly mistakes like breaking glassware, or failing to clean the apartment. They also seem to have starved the girl as punishment,” said Biplob Kumar Sarker, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He added that almost the entire body of the victim was seared.

Police arrested Shariful Islam and his wife Rozi on Saturday night from hiding in Sreepur of Gazipur for allegedly killing their domestic help Hasina.

Hasina, who worked at their Mohammadpur house in Dhaka for four months, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on May 20. She succumbed to her injuries on Friday.

Sub-inspector Pradip Chandra Sarker, who is investigating the murder case, said the couple had mercilessly beaten the girl 3-4 days before she was hospitalised.

A Dhaka court yesterday placed the duo on one day's remand after police produced them before it seeking seven days' remand.
