Election to 156 UPs today

The Election Commission will hold election to 156 union parishads at different parts of the country today.

EC sources said they have taken all-out preparations to hold the elections in a free and fair manner as major polical parties have nominated candidates.

Deputy Secretary of EC Farhad Ahmed Khan told the news agency that the elections to 174 UPs were supposed to be held as per schedule but polls to 18 UPs were postponed due to civil litigations. This is the first UP election under the new EC, he added.

Khan said two mobile teams of police-APBN-Battalion Ansars along with a platoon of BGB and another of RAB will remain vigilant at each UP during the voting, from 8:00am to 4:00pm. A platoon of Coast Guard will supplement the law enforcers in coastal areas. The country has over 4,500 UPs, and election to most of those were held in phases in early 2016.
