Cops pledge security to all at Ekushey book fair

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has pledged security to all during the month-long Ekushey book fair that begins at Dhaka University from tomorrow.

“We have chalked out foolproof security system,” DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said at a pre-opening press briefing at Suhrawardy Udyan today.

“We are determined to provide security to all writers and publishers,” he said.

Regarding the security measures taken, he said Bangla Academy and adjacent areas will be under the surveillance cameras and law enforcers.

Centering the book fair special month-long traffic measures will be taken all around the DMP area, he added. In answer to a question, the DMP boss said there are no imminent threats.

“We are prepared to control any untoward incident,” he stressed. “We will also curb the publication of any books that hurts religious and social sentiments.”

Lt Col Imranul Hasan, commanding officer of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-3, also talked with the journalists about this year’s security measures centering the Book Fair.

“We are monitoring social media platforms to ensure flawless security during the Book Fair,” the Rab official said.

ROAD CURBS

The area from TSC to Doyel Chattor will remain off limits to vehicles for the book fair.The people with motor vehicles entering from the side of Shahbagh can park at Malchattor. On the other hand, those who will enter from the side of High Court will have to park at Gymnasium area.

The DMP boss also suggested visitors to avoid Karwan Bazar-Shahbagh-TSC route to avoid traffic jam as one side of the road is closed due to construction.
